Posture abnormality in children

Most posture abnormality like scoliosis begins to develop in children just before puberty. It affects girls more than boys. As an abnormal posture starts developing in a child, it does not cause pain. Therefore, parents should look for certain symptom in their child, beginning at about age 8:
  • Leg length discrepancy (one hip is higher than the other)
  • one shoulder is higher than the other
  • the child may be leaning to or favouring one side
  • the ribs and/or shoulder blade on one side of the back are more prominent than on the other side. (This may look like a "hump".)
  • the waist looks uneven.
In addition, many other diseases such as neurologic disorders (cerebellar disease, cerebral palsy) and bronchopulmaonary dysplasia can cause posture abnormality in a child.

There is also a type of kyphosis that occurs just in teenagers called scheuermann disease. Even one symptom in your child indicates the need for an examination by a family doctor, physical therapy or orthopaedic.

Our Kensington physical therapy for postural abnormality like scoliosis is based on family history, age of onset, location of the curve, severity of the curve and other factors. In many cases, physical therapy is essential to prevent curve from progressing. In Kensington physical therapy practice we can corrects the posture abnormality in children by focusing on strengthening and stretching exercise of some important muscle group. For children and adults, very often exercise prescribed by physical therapist, such as core strengthening and pilates, can be used quite effectively to manage the pain and stiffness associated with postural abnormality. Kensington physical therapy has a long-term treatment plan for posture correction based on adequate exercise programme.  If postural abnormality like scoliosis is not treated by orthopaedic or physical therapist on time, then often does develop further which resulting back pain, deformity and breathing difficulty. Sometimes it takes many years for these symptoms to develop, perhaps until the patient is an adult.
