Inflammatory conditions affecting the spinal joints can cause back pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis is an age-related form of arthritis that can affect spinal joints and discs. Ankylosing spondylitis can affect younger adults and is associated with pain and stiffness in the lower back. Rheumatoid arthritis may also affect the spine alongside other joints.

Back pain has many possible causes

Mechanical problems in the back itself can cause pain, including disc changes, muscle spasm, tight muscles and disc injury. Sprains, fractures, accidents and falls can also contribute to back pain.

Other conditions that may be associated with back pain include:

  • Scoliosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Arthritis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Pregnancy-related back pain
  • Kidney stones
  • Infections
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibromyalgia

Some symptoms need further medical assessment. Contact a clinician promptly if back pain is severe, persistent, getting worse or accompanied by concerning new symptoms.
