Non-Specific Low Back Pain

By Rose Clinic August 27, 2026

Rose Clinic journal

Non-specific low back pain is the most common type of mechanical low back pain. In most acute cases there is no underlying disease that can be identified as the cause.

It may relate to a sprain or overstretch of a muscle or ligament, a minor disc problem or irritation in a small facet joint. It can start after lifting, twisting or seemingly without a clear trigger.

Pain is often felt in one area of the back, but may spread to the buttocks or thighs. It may ease when lying flat and become worse with movement, coughing or sneezing. It is also sometimes described as mechanical back pain, simple backache, lumbago or muscular back pain.
